Where you might dive

Boat dives visit shallow Key Largo reefs chosen for conditions — sites are not guaranteed.

Christ of the Abyss

Just north of the Grecian Rocks, widely considered one of the most popular dive sites worldwide, the Christ of the Abyss statue is the third bronze of the original mold, the “Il Christo Degli Abissi” from the Mediterranean Sea. Because the site sits in about 25 feet of water, it's an ideal first ocean dive.

Horseshoe Reef

One of our favorite dive sites within the Key Largo Dry Rocks area. With depths ranging from 5ft to 25ft, this makes an amazing site for open water divers and photographers alike — winding swim-throughs, a large formation of elkhorn coral, and an abundance of parrot fish, sergeant majors and lobsters!

Fingers Reef

Southeast of the Elbow, this reef forms a spur and groove formation featuring coral ridges topped by giant elkhorn corals. These shallow coral colonies provide excellent habitats for schooling grunts and other tropical fish — a great site for photographers given the shallow depths and massive variety of marine life.

Carysfort Reef & Carysfort Ledge

North of the Grecian Rocks, Carysfort is one of the largest major reef systems in the sanctuary — acres of shallow reef edged by a steep drop-off to 75 ft, Carysfort Ledge. Divers can swim near Carysfort Lighthouse to visit the elkhorn coral gardens.

Train Wheels Reef

The resting place of an old sunken supply barge. While the wreck has become part of the reef, the cargo the ship was carrying that day — train wheels for the Flagler Railroad — is still found scattered around the ocean floor. Large elkhorn coral has grown from the wheels, protecting large schools of fish!

Anchor Chain Reef

Just south of the City of Washington site. A large fishing barge used to utilize these anchors as other ships came to unload their fishing hauls for the day. In 1960, Hurricane Donna caused irreparable damage to the barge, leaving wreckage that is still there to this day.

Banana Reef

On the most southern end of the Grecian Rocks area, Banana Reef gets its name from the long and sloped ledge that, well, looks like a banana! A beautiful place to dive in Key Largo.

Benwood Wreck

The S.S. Benwood was a steam-powered cargo ship built in 1910, lost in a collision off Key Largo on April 9th, 1942 — and believed to have been used for aerial target practice after WWII. One of the most popular shipwreck dive sites in Key Largo, just east of Molasses Reef.

City of Washington Wreck

An iron-hulled steamer launched in 1877, used for passenger transport, cargo trade, and as a troop transport during the Spanish-American war. While under tow she ran aground, broke up, and sank on July 10th, 1917.

N. North Ledges Reef

On the north end of French Reef above Molasses Reef, the North Ledges provide beautiful spur-and-groove coral formations and sand channels parallel to the main reef. Hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtles are often found here, along with southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and green moray eels.

S. South Ledges Reef

The deepest section of the reef and its southernmost point — a very steep drop-off and another beautiful dive location, relatively close to the City of Washington wreck, north of Alligator Reef.

Spiegel Grove Wreck

Sunk in Key Largo in June 2002 — and fascinatingly turned upright by Hurricane Dennis in 2005. The USS Spiegel Grove is becoming an entire reef ecosystem, located northeast of Molasses Reef.
