Booking & Trips

Do I need to sign a waiver before boarding?

Yes, all guests are required to sign a liability waiver prior to boarding any of our vessels.

To ensure a quick and smooth check-in process, we strongly encourage you to complete your digital snorkel release waiver online before you arrive at the dive center.

  • Online Completion: The waiver can be completed digitally on your computer or smartphone at any time prior to your arrival.
  • At Check-in: If you are unable to complete it online, we have tablets available at our check-in counter, but completing it beforehand will save you time.
  • Guardianship: Waivers for all minors (guests under 18) must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
What is your weather cancellation policy?

Safety is the top priority for Silent World.

  • Captain's Discretion: All of our trips are highly dependent on weather conditions (primarily wind speed and direction). Our experienced USCG “Master” Captains make the final decision to run or cancel a trip based on safety, high winds, rough seas, and poor visibility.
  • Customer Options: If we must cancel a trip due to unsafe weather conditions, you will be notified promptly and will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule your tour.
What if the weather is bad?

Your safety is our #1 priority. If the Captain determines conditions are unsafe or visibility is too poor for a good experience, we will cancel the trip and offer a full refund or free reschedule. We don't go out if it's not fun.

What is your customer cancellation policy?
  • Cancellations: Cancellations made within 48 hours of departure forfeit the full price paid and will not receive a refund.
  • Rescheduling: You may reschedule your trip anytime up until 24 hours before departure. Rescheduling within 72 hours of departure will be attempted but cannot be guaranteed.
  • No-Shows: If you fail to show up for your trip, no refund will be issued.
How much should I tip the boat crew?

The customary gratuity for a snorkel tour typically ranges around $10 per person or 10-20% of the total cost of the snorkeling excursion. Snorkel tour Captains and Crew merit a gratuity when they elevate the tour into an exciting and enjoyable experience. Tipping is entirely optional, and individuals have the freedom to refrain from tipping, particularly if they are dissatisfied with the service provided.

How much do you tip a snorkel tour?

The customary gratuity for a snorkel tour typically ranges around $10 per person or 15-20% of the total cost of the excursion. Snorkel tour guides merit a gratuity when they elevate the tour into an exciting and enjoyable experience — but tipping is entirely optional.

What does “all-inclusive” cover on the tour?

All-inclusive covers all necessary snorkel gear — high-quality mask and snorkel, fins, and a snorkeling vest, as well as pool noodles. Included on tour are chips, soda, filtered ice water, and REEF-safe sunscreen.

Is your provided sunscreen really reef-safe?

Yes, our provided sunscreen is certified reef-safe. We are an eco-conscious dive shop committed to protecting the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States. We proudly supply FREE reef-safe sunscreen to all our guests.

Many common sunscreens contain chemicals like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which have been shown to cause coral bleaching and DNA damage, even in small concentrations. Our reef-safe sunscreens use mineral-based active ingredients (typically zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that protect your skin without harming the fragile coral ecosystem you've come to explore. We appreciate your help in protecting our beautiful reefs!

Will we see the Christ of the Abyss statue?

We aim to visit the iconic Christ of the Abyss statue on one of the two reef sites during every single tour, as long as conditions allow.

Please note: the Christ of the Abyss statue is located on the seaward side of the barrier reef. Because of this position, it is the first site to experience high waves and surface current. If the Captain determines conditions are unsafe due to weather, we will prioritize your safety and comfort by choosing an alternative, equally spectacular reef site within the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Your safety is our top priority.

How much does the Icons and Secrets tour cost?

$99 per person, all-inclusive. This covers all snorkel gear, refreshments, reef-safe sunscreen, and PADI crew guidance. Ages 5 and up.

How much does the Safari cost?

$90 per person, all-inclusive. This covers all snorkel gear, refreshments, and reef-safe sunscreen. Ages 5 and up.

How much does the Golden Hour cost?

$99 per person, all-inclusive. This covers all snorkel gear, refreshments, reef-safe sunscreen, your blanket gift, Silipint cup, and Prosecco or cider toast.

Is the Golden Hour a booze cruise?

No. The Golden Hour is a romantic, chill sunset snorkel experience — not a party boat. You'll receive a complimentary Prosecco or cider toast at sunset, but the focus is on the reef, the golden light, and the beauty of the Florida Keys at dusk.

How many guests are on the Golden Hour?

We cap The Golden Hour at just 26 guests on a catamaran built for 49. That's 50% capacity — twice the space, half the crowd.

What gifts are included?

Every guest receives a cozy blanket and an unbreakable Silipint cup — both yours to keep. Plus a Prosecco or cider toast as the sun sets.

What is the minimum age?

Most snorkel tours are ages 5 and up. The Golden Hour VIP Sunset Snorkel is for guests ages 8 and up. The relaxed pace and sunset cruise make it a great option for families with older children.

FAQs

Snorkeling

Do you offer wetsuits?

The water is generally warm, but in winter/spring months (January-March), we recommend a wetsuit for comfort. We have wetsuits available for rent at the shop during check-in.

Can I bring a camera?

Absolutely. We highly recommend GoPros or underwater housing for your phone. The shallow reefs we visit offer the best natural light for photography. We also have very affordable rental GoPros available.

Is snorkeling equipment included?

Yes! We provide high-quality sanitized masks, snorkels, fins, and a mandatory safety vest. You are welcome to bring your own gear.

What is a “Snorkel Only” boat?

Most dive shops run mixed boats catering to scuba divers, meaning the sites are often deeper (25-40ft), and snorkelers have to wait for divers to finish their bottom time. A Snorkel Only boat, such as the Siren and the Calypso, visits shallow reefs (5-15ft) perfect for surface viewing, and the tour is curated entirely for snorkelers.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. While we provide safety vests for buoyancy and visibility, you must be comfortable swimming in water deeper than you can touch without any flotation assistance. We do not recommend these trips for non-swimmers.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

Yes. All snorkeling participants must be a “Good Swimmer.”

For your safety and comfort, this is defined as being able to confidently swim in water over your head. We reserve the right to prohibit any guest from entering the water if our crew determines they do not meet the necessary swimming ability. Non-swimmers are welcome to purchase a passenger ticket and remain on the boat.

How do snorkeling masks work?

A snorkeling mask creates a watertight seal against the face using a soft rubber or silicone skirt, allowing the wearer to see clearly underwater. The tempered glass lenses provide durability and clarity, while the nose pocket facilitates pressure equalization. Secured by an adjustable strap, the mask ensures a comfortable fit, enabling an enjoyable and leak-free snorkeling experience.

Can snorkeling cause vertigo?

Snorkeling itself typically does not cause vertigo. Vertigo is often associated with inner ear issues or disturbances in the vestibular system, and snorkeling is not known to directly trigger these conditions.

Can you snorkel when it's cloudy?

Snorkeling when it's cloudy is completely possible and can still be an enjoyable experience. While sunny weather enhances visibility, cloudy conditions do not necessarily prevent snorkeling.

Is it safe to snorkel while pregnant?

Snorkeling during pregnancy is generally considered safe for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. However, at Silent World Dive Center, we recommend consulting with a healthcare professional before engaging in any water-based activities while pregnant. Factors such as individual health, the stage of pregnancy, and water conditions should be taken into account to ensure the well-being of both the expectant mother and the baby.

Can snorkeling make you sick?

Snorkeling itself does not typically cause illness, but factors like motion sickness and waterborne contaminants can affect some individuals. Silent World Dive Center prioritizes guest safety by providing guidance on preventing motion sickness, choosing snorkel sites with good water quality, and emphasizing hygiene practices. Snorkeling, like any water-based activity, carries inherent risks — with proper precautions and adherence to safety guidelines, the risks can be significantly minimized.

Is the Safari guided in the water?

The Safari is an unguided in-water experience. Our trained crew stays on board for safety and assistance, but you're free to explore each site at your own pace. This high-energy format is designed for confident swimmers who want independence.

What sites will we visit?

It depends on the tour. The Safari’s standard itinerary includes Christ of the Abyss, Grecian Rocks or Banana Reef, and a Captain's-choice third site — typically North Dry Rocks or Gorilla Rock. The Captain selects the best sites for the day's conditions on every trip.

Is this tour good for beginners?

Yes — as long as you can swim confidently in water over your head. Most of our snorkel tours welcome beginners. The Safari’s pace is faster (~30 minutes per site), so it's ideal for active snorkelers, but beginners who are comfortable swimmers will enjoy it. All participants must be ages 5+ (8+ on The Golden Hour).

Is this tour suitable for beginners?

Yes! Our Icons and Secrets tour is designed for swimmers ages 5 and up. All participants must be able to swim confidently in water over their head. Our PADI-certified crew provides guidance at every stop.

What vessel is used for the Safari?

The Safari runs on The Siren, our custom-built Corinthian Catamaran capped at 70% capacity for a comfortable, uncrowded experience.

What makes the Legends tour different from the Classic?

The Legends tour visits 3 sites (vs 2 on the Classic), includes the Benwood Wreck and Molasses Reef, runs for 4.5 hours with 2 full hours of water time, and operates exclusively on The Siren at 70% capacity. It's our most comprehensive tour.

How deep is the Benwood Wreck?

The Benwood Wreck sits in approximately 25-45 feet of water. The shallowest sections are easily visible from the surface, making it a spectacular snorkel site with dramatic structure and abundant marine life.

How deep is the water at Carysfort Reef?

The snorkeling area at Carysfort Reef ranges from approximately 15 to 25 feet. The shallow elkhorn coral gardens near the lighthouse are easily visible from the surface, making this an ideal site for snorkelers of all experience levels.

Is the Christ of the Abyss in a protected zone?

Yes. The Christ of the Abyss statue is located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, a federally protected zone. We follow all sanctuary guidelines and our crew ensures a respectful, eco-conscious visit.

How deep is the schooner wreck?

The 300ft Unknown Wooden Schooner rests in approximately 8 feet of water — so shallow you can see every detail from the surface. It's one of the most accessible wreck sites in the Keys.

Where do we snorkel?

On The Golden Hour, the Captain selects the best shallow reef for the day's conditions — typically Christ of the Abyss or North Dry Rocks. You'll spend up to 1 hour swimming in warm, golden-hour light before the sunset cruise home.

Why take a snorkel tour in the Florida Keys?

Our tours provide an unforgettable journey to the underwater world that can't be found anywhere else. Our center is run by 5-star PADI-trained instructors and staff that prioritize your enjoyment and safety. Our tours are small-group excursions that give all patrons the time and attention they need to truly capture the full experience of this amazing world below the surface.

What is the best time to snorkel in Key Largo?

Key Largo's incredibly clear water and world-famous reefs make for fantastic snorkeling any time of the day. That said, as with most diving, sunlight penetrates the deepest when it is directly overhead, typically at or just after noon.

Can you snorkel from the shore in Key Largo?

There are two designated areas for beach-accessible snorkeling in John Pennekamp State Park. However, the most beautiful snorkeling locations are only accessible by dive boat. Let our team take you to life-changing locations around the reef, like the Christ of the Abyss statue, the Benwood wreck, and so much more.

Do I need a wetsuit to snorkel in Key Largo?

With winter temperatures ranging between 68°F and 76°F, this depends on you. If you are accustomed to diving in cool mountain lakes, you probably wouldn't notice it swimming sans wetsuit. If you are used to warmer snorkeling waters, you'll likely want a wetsuit. Silent World has wetsuits available for use.

FAQs

Getting Here / Practical

Why is the Florida Keys called the Dive Capital of the World?

The Florida Keys is home to the last living coral reef in North America, and the 3rd largest barrier reef in the world. Because of this, many realize that this is a one-of-a-kind experience. The sites are also easily accessible to divers and snorkelers, making Key Largo snorkeling an experience to remember.

How warm is the water in Key Largo?

In the summer and fall months, water temperatures can climb as high as 86°F (30°C). Winter temperatures typically range between 68°F (20°C) and 76°F (24°C).

Is it safe to swim in Key Largo?

Swimming in Key Largo is as safe as any other world-class snorkeling location — the safety depends on you! If you are a capable swimmer and listen to the instructions of the Silent World staff, swimming the beautiful water of Key Largo is perfectly safe.

What is a National Marine Sanctuary?

A National Marine Sanctuary is a zone where marine life has special protection. These sanctuaries were made in response to the speedy destruction of many marine ecosystems. Here we proudly protect and promote the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary!

Where are coral reefs found?

Other than the Florida Keys, coral reefs are found on the borders of Australia, India, Fiji, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and the Maldives. Reef systems are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters and usually need strong waves to bring nutrients and oxygen to the reef.

What animals live in the coral reef?

All of our Key Largo snorkeling sites have such a diverse spectacle of marine life. You'll be able to experience seeing the exotic array of tropical fish, lobsters, nurse sharks, barracudas, sting rays, and even endangered sea turtles — in their protected and natural habitat.

What is an artificial reef?

An artificial reef is a man-made structure that is built to promote marine life in the area. One of our largest artificial reefs is the Spiegel Grove site, a Landing Ship Dock that sunk in 2002, creating its own reef system full of hundreds of tropical fish, coral, and sponges.

How does pollution affect sea life?

More than 8 million metric tons of plastic waste make their way into the ocean each year, causing marine animals to either swallow large amounts or become entangled in our man-made trash. The rest breaks down into even smaller pieces and absorbs toxic chemicals that kill off coral reefs and other ecosystems. We each must do our part to protect the ocean and its creatures.

How many keys are in the Florida Keys?

There are over 800 keys in total! These low-lying coral islands stretch for over 120 miles, varying in size and accessibility. Some are very small islands, but the larger ones, like Key Largo and Key West, are quite busy and popular sites.

What are the names of the Florida Keys?

The Florida Keys are made up of hundreds of keys; sorting through all the names is quite the challenge! However, the largest and most popular isles are divided up into five main regions: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine, and Key West.

What is the history behind the Grecian Rocks?

Grecian Rocks is a coral reef right off the side of the Christ of the Abyss snorkeling site. It's one of the most popular and studied reefs within the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary, known for its unique structure, amazing coral diversity, clear waters, and calm back-reef area.
